Several years ago, I came across a picture of “Twin Silos,” constructed of an orange-brown clay block, from the Mason City, Iowa, brickyards. These silos were built near Waterloo, Iowa, in the “Everlasting Silo” brand from Mason City. At the time, I didn’t think too much of it. However, I recently came across a photo of the entire farmstead, where two houses, two barns, one round barn, and the twin silos were all built of the same Mason City clay block. This photo said the complex of farm buildings were built on the William Galloway farm, near Waterloo, which helped me solve the mystery of the “Twin Silos” photo. It turns out that William Galloway was nationally known from 1900 until his death in 1952. He invented many new farm implements and used new marketing techniques to sell his products.
